# Why does load\_dataset make https request when loading a local dataset?

[This issue](https://discuss.huggingface.co/t/load-dataset-how-to-skip-starting-new-https-connection-1-storage-googleapis-com-443/33951) shows how to turn it off, but im still not entirely sure I understand why its needed in the first place.
